It's hard to believe, but with the proliferation of cell phones that have photo and video capability, anyone can now create a cell phone video news cast. How is this accomplished? Simple, you just have to be in the right place at the right time.
Now, on the surface, it may seem trivial to capture some breaking news with your cameraphone. All you need to do is stand around on the street corner and something is bound to happen, right?
However, you may find days and weeks go by and nothing of significance happens that is newsworthy. The intrepid reporter inside of you needs to get the 'scoop'. Is there a way to proactively seek out news worthy video footage that can be used in a news cast?
The paparazzi have long sought photo opportunities of celebrities using dubious methods. Camping out in front of homes, health clubs, vacation retreats - nothing is too private or too sacred. Why do they go through the trouble? It pays really, really well.
You don't have the same equipment, training, or desire to get beaten up for snapping a photo of a celebrity that has an attitude problem. Besides, you are not a professional photographer and don't have the expertise needed to sell an image you have captured to the media the same way.
But there is one thing that you, the citizen journalist, has that a professional does not. Ubiquity. You see, the paparazzi have specific targets in mind and go to great lengths to capture the image of who's hot at the moment. But you are everywhere, ready for anything.
Armed with a video-capable cell phone means no matter what happens around you, you are ready to transmit the images globally. You just never know when Kevin Bacon is going to walk into the same ice cream shop that you happen to be enjoying a cone of Rocky Road at.
More important than that, of course, is being one of those on the streets of New York when some Arab terrorist scumbag flies a plane into the Twin Towers.
Since you never know when either of these types of events will happen, how do you seek out newsworthy events to capture on video without risking your life or livelihood? You need to get creative.
There are numerous events taking place in every city across the country that are not deemed important enough by the media to commit resources like staff reporters, video cameras, vans with satellite dishes, etc. There are only so many vans with satellite dishes on them anyway.
So, comb the newspapers and other local postings of upcoming events in your area and go to them with your video cell phone or camcorder. Record and document what is going on and then tell the media about it.
Who knows? Maybe your video footage will be used on the air by the TV News Networks.
How do you alert the media and invite them to take a look at your latest video creation? You can either find the local TV news stations in your city or state and contact them by phone, fax or email. Alternatively, you can use a newsworthy video announcement service.
Start your own cell phone video news cast by uploading some video footage now.
